Nestled among Florida's surprisingly rolling hills, Brooksville has anchored Hernando County as its seat for more than a century. What began as scattered frontier settlements in the 1840s including Fort DeSoto, a military outpost and stagecoach stop on the Palatka-to-Tampa line consolidated into a proper town by 1856. Today, Brooksville maintains that small-town warmth while offering the essentials: local parks with walking trails, a state college campus, and easy access to both Tampa (45 miles south) and the Gulf Coast (15 miles west).
